The federal government has announced its intentions to introduce a new National Identity Card with payment and social service features. The new and innovative National Identity Card is the production of the collaboration with the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).The new National ID card, imbued with verifiable National Identity features, is set to be a game-changer in facilitating seamless access to government and private social services, promoting financial empowerment, and fostering increased citizen engagement in nation-building endeavors. This initiative, powered by AfriGO, a National domestic card scheme, represents a significant milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to modernize its identification infrastructure and promote financial inclusion. In addition to serving as a robust proof of identity, the National ID card will function as a versatile financial tool, allowing cardholders to seamlessly conduct transactions as debit or prepaid cards linked to their preferred bank accounts.
According to the Head of Corporate Communications of NIMC, Dr Kayode Adegoke, “this card will address the demand for physical identification enabling cardholders to prove their identity, access government and private social services, facilitate financial inclusion for disenfranchised Nigerians, empower citizens, as well as encourage increased participation in nation-building.”
Crucially, the card will incorporate state-of-the-art security features and adhere to stringent data protection protocols to safeguard cardholders’ personal information and privacy.
Biometric authentication, including fingerprint and facial recognition technologies, will serve as primary identity verification mechanisms, ensuring the integrity and security of user data.
Key features of the new National ID card include a Machine-readable Zone (MRZ) compliant with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards for e-passport information, as well as a Nigeria-specific quick response code (NQ) containing the national identification number.
Additionally, the card will include vital information such as travel, health insurance details, and eligibility for various government intervention programs, including microloans, agricultural subsidies, food stamps, and transportation and energy subsidies.
To facilitate widespread adoption and accessibility, the Federal Government has outlined multiple channels through which eligible citizens and legal residents can request the National ID card. These channels include online applications, commercial banks, participating government agencies, and NIMC offices nationwide, ensuring broad coverage and convenience for all stakeholders.
