The demolition of structures on Landmark Beach in Lagos, Nigeria, to make way for the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway was one decision that sparked controversy among Nigerians.
Recall that the federal government demolished some sections of the Landmark beach in Lagos to make way for the LAGOS-CALABAR COASTAL HIGHWAY, a decision that didn’t sit well with many nigerians considering the people affected and its negative impact on livelihood of some people including the environmental risk it poses.
Despite the demolition that took place, a recent development by the Federal government in respect to the proposed realignment of the Highway due to the presence of submarine cables along the coastline have raised many questions in the heart of many citizens across various platforms.
Many have continued to argue that the government’s actions have already caused significant harm to businesses and individuals, raising questions about accountability and the decision-making processes involved in large-scale infrastructure projects.
While we wait to see the governments next line of action here are five reasons why Nigerians kicked against the beach demolition
- Livelihoods lost
Many people relied on the beach for their income. From waiters and cleaners to shopkeepers, the economic downturn in Nigeria makes losing a source of income due to a highway project with limited local benefits a heavy burden.
- Memories buried
Landmark Beach wasn’t just a beach; it was a place where memories were made. Proposals, dates, concerts, and countless other moments were shared here. Demolishing the structures wipes away these cherished experiences for many.
- Environmental concerns
Building a highway along the coast carries environmental risks. Disrupting natural barriers can lead to increased flooding in the future. Additionally, altering the shoreline will impact weather patterns and natural processes.
- Loss of tourism
Landmark Beach was a tourist magnet, drawing visitors to Lagos and generating revenue for the state through business owners. Its demolition reduces tourism opportunities, potentially impacting local businesses that depend on visitor traffic.
- Misplaced priorities
Nigerians are grappling with everyday necessities—food, electricity, and education. Shouldn’t resources be better allocated towards addressing immediate needs before embarking on a large-scale highway project?
While we believe that infrastructure projects are important for nations development, there is always need for careful evaluation to minimise negative impacts on communities and the environment.
