The Instagram post by UK-based Nigerian Life Coach, Solomon Buchi has sparked reactions from Nigerians both home and in diaspora with many stating the need for his children to have Nigerian passports.
Buchi’s post also stated reasons for his decision not to get a Nigerian passport for his children as he revealed the ills he went through during the ENDSARS protest as well as how his brother’s house was bungled by men of EFCC in masks.
It is no longer news that the current state of the country has left many citizens especially youth with no option than to leave the country in search of greener pastures with many having no thoughts to return back to the country.
However, his decision seems too extreme as many do not consider it wise.
His post reads: “My children will be British citizens by birth, and I’m not getting them a Nigerian passport/citizenship until they turn 18 and can decide if they want to get a Nigerian passport.
“If you think I’m not patriotic, use that your patriotism to buy you a bag of rice for ₦10k.”
Some of the reactions are:
mrpaulbridges “You used to drag me for saying stuffs like this but now you have joined me🤝 welcome to the other side 🇬🇧 for life🙏”
wisdom_king_ “I feel you but what if the UK government decides today that all foreigners should exit the country? What are your backup plans? Will you kwechiri?😂”
flakes_ff “Your children are Nigerian as soon as they are born. Its a birth right 😊 Unless you don’t plan to visit Nigeria with them you will see having a passport makes it easier to go in and out of the country. The Nigerian visa drama and cost isn’t worth it. Finally our children don’t have to inherit the trauma we have about being a Nigerian. Their experiences will differ from ours.”
Buchi’s post can be likened to one of the many decisions made by young Nigerians who have clamoured for change and are yet to see it.
