The rate at which cases around paternity issues arise these days is becoming disturbing.
Many couples in Nigeria are increasingly resorting to Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) testing due to rising challenges such as infidelity suspicions, fertility struggles, and migration-related worries.
DNA paternity tests are unraveling a lot of buried family secrets. Keeping family secrets isn’t as easy as it used to be and just one DNA test could change everything for better or for worse.
While many children are experiencing paternity scandals by learning that their father is really not their biological father, many men have been unknowingly raising children that are not theirs and to curb the trend, there have been calls for introduction of mandatory DNA testing at birth.
It is often said that a woman is in the best position to identify the father of her child, so once a woman fingers a particular man, case closed. However, developments show that proving paternity is often not as straightforward.
But rampant cases of denials, disputes and counterclaims of paternity have been making the rounds.
Just a while ago a Nigerian international footballer Kayode Olanrewaju, was hit with a personal crisis as reports emerge questioning the paternity of his three children. Allegations surfaced that his wife, Dora Ezinne Kayode, deceived him about her age and committed adultery, possibly with prominent pastor Tobi Adegboyega.
The shocking revelation rocked both the football and religious communities, with Kayode reportedly in emotional distress. He claims that Dora, who is seven years older than she had stated, defrauded him and committed infidelity. The news has led to significant public and media attention, with various reactions flooding social media.
Although the wife has vowed to take legal action if the football refuses to withdraw the allegation stating that no DNA was conducted.
On late Singer Illerioluwa Aloba better known as Mohbad, the late singer’s father Joseph Aloba, has continued to demand that a DNA test must be conducted on his grandson Liam to ascertain his true paternity before the singer is buried.
While calls for introduction of mandatory DNA testing at birth is on the rise, many are also of the opinion that the test would ruin many homes if made compulsory.
