In a quest to be known, we’ve seen people do a lot of things via their social media handles.
In a bid to be famous or generate traffic on their page a lot of individuals especially bloggers tend to post materials that are sometimes untrue and other times demeaning.
It’s interesting that some hide under the umbrella of the fundamental human rights: FREEDOM OF SPEECH but a lot of them have forgotten that there’s a law on DEFAMATION OF CHARACTER.
In a recent development, the internet has been buzzing over a claim that was made probably out of the desire to gain attention and draw traffic but little did the writer know that his lines of words will spring forth such chaos.
This writer identified as Okoronkwo Ejike on his social media handle made a post concerning the resemblance of Mercy Chinwo’s child to that of Min. Nathaniel Bassey.
If it had been a mere comparison of looks done in a comic or justified manner probably netizens would not have taken it so seriously but a write up that speaks about the fidelity of well known gospel ministers was a wrong take.
Many have requested that this individual who made the post be arrested for defamation of character. Though he had tendered public apology for his action but the damage has been done.
This brings me to the stand point that a lot of individuals need to be sensitized on the use of social media. Many feel because it’s their page, their data and time they can write whatever they want which is wrong.
One of the guidelines for posting online is that your post has to be ‘healthy’ and fit for public consumption.
Let’s do better with our mobile devices, let’s be the change that the world needs rather than the hate that spreads abroad.
Let’s make social media a healthy environment for all!
