Award winning Nigerian Afrobeat star Tiwatope Savage also known as Tiwa Savage has made her acting debut in a Nigerian movie drama “Water and Garri”.
The singer, who has collaborated with the likes of Sam Smith, Chris Martin of Coldplay and Nas, stars as Aisha in the Prime Video production.
Speaking about the movie in a recent interview she revealed that It’s a story about love and betrayal.
Savage is also executive producer of the film as well as writer and producer of its soundtrack.
According to her the initial idea behind the movie was “supposed to be a visual project” to accompany a music she had written two years earlier.
Directed and edited by Meji Alabi, the wunderkind Afrobeats creative that has worked with big names including Burna Boy, MrEazi, Water and Garri follows Aisha (Savage), an ambitious fashion designer who returns home after a decade working in the elite fashion industry in the US.
Aisha finds herself returning to a home that has been drastically changed by time and chance.
The movie which is set to premiere today May 10 is part of Prime Video’s authentic African series and films initiative, which aims to bring films from the region to a wider audience.
Tiwa Savage had also revealed that she was drawn to the film because it was told from a female perspective.While Savage says that she and debut director Meji Alabi were “winging it” when they embarked on the project, she’s happy with the result.
“It turned out good – turned out really good,” she says.
“And I think because it was a first for both of us, we were kind of really helping each other out and very supportive of each other.”
Savage has long eyed an acting career, landing cameos in big projects including on MTV Shuga Naija. However, this is her first time playing a lead role.
